That’s right. The United Nations, and the World Health Organiziation (WHO) agree that naturally occurring CBD is a medicine – the DEA disagrees. The DEA claims that there is no medicinal value or medical use. The UN is now unequivocally recognizing that CBD does have medical value – and a lot of it.

The interesting part of this will play itself out over the coming years. In 2015, a federal judge in Sacramento claimed that whether the DEA was correct or not, they had followed its own internal process claiming it was unsafe with no medical value. Because the USA is a member of the organization which recognizes CBD as a medicine, they will not only have to argue that WHO is wrong, but that it had intentions of recognizing CBD as a medicine in future cases. A court case like this would certainly draw upon scientists from around the world, and from the USA to speak against the DEA’s current stance.

It was actually the WHO expert committee on Drug Dependence that stated:

“Recent evidence from animal and human studies shows that its use could have some therapeutic value for seizures due to epilepsy and related conditions,” said the UN report. “Current evidence also shows that cannabidiol is not likely to be abused or create dependence as for other cannabinoids (such as Tetra Hydro Cannabinol (THC), for instance).”

The saddest part is that in 1988, a federal judge ruled in favor of cannabis, claiming it did indeed have medical benefits. The DEA has waged war against cannabis, and even receives billions of tax dollars each year to stop production, cultivation, legalization and more of cannabis. NORML Political Director Justin Strekal said, “It is yet another example of the US government placing ideology over evidence when it comes to issues related to the cannabis plant.”
