CBD For Inflammation – Does It Work?

Pain and Inflammation, V1

Natural Product Insider recently did an article on CBD’s use as an anti-inflammatory medication. Currently over $60billion a year are spent for pain relief drugs. That number could increase by another 25% by 2024. This helps answer the question as to why people are turning to natural treatments like hemp.

Thousands of anecdotal studies, and even a few clinical trials exist, showing promise for cannabis products like CBD – and they all showed fewer side effects than the typical pain relief drugs on the market today. The National Academies of Sciences Institutes of Medicine (IOM) published a study in January 2017 titled “The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: The Current State of Evidence and Recommendations of Research”. The study provides evidence that it is effective for pain relief, but stated that more research is needed for a complete conclusion.

Earlier in 2017, the FDA requested comment from the public regarding the safety of CBD. In large, the comments recommended the descheduling of marijuana and removal from the Controlled Substances Act. Additionally, many people asked the FDA to clarify hemp oil from marijuana products. The 2014 Farm Bill clarifies that hemp is not marijuana, as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC. Further comments urged the FDA to remove marijuana from the Schedule 1 listing – one that claims there is no accepted medical use.

In conclusion, this article encouraged consumers to look for clearly labeled products and to ask questions if they are uncertain of what they are consuming. So, although more research is needed, it seems that CBD may be a very viable source for those suffering from inflammation, or a wide array of other issues.
